Staying safe with moringa
A few things worth keeping in mind so moringa stays a safe, healthy part of your routine.
- The leaves, pods, and seeds (what's in food products) have a strong safety track record at normal food amounts.
- The root and bark are different and shouldn't be eaten - they contain a substance that can be harmful. Only use products made from the leaf.
- Pregnancy: parts of the plant (root, bark, flowers) have traditionally been used to bring on labour, so they're best avoided. Pregnant or breastfeeding customers should check with their doctor first.
- On medication for diabetes or blood pressure? Moringa could add to its effect - talk to your doctor and monitor your levels if you use it regularly.
- In very rare cases, people have had serious skin reactions. If you notice a rash or anything unusual after starting moringa, stop and see a doctor.
- Source matters: look for certified organic powder dried at low temperature (shadow-dried, not sun-dried), from a supplier who tests for contaminants.
